Athletics Australia Indigenous Program visits South Australia

 [Posted 16-Jun-2006]

24 students from the South Australian Indigenous Sport Training Academy (SAISTA) and the Kuarna Plains School in Elizabeth participated in a one-day Orientation To Coaching athletics workshop on Thursday 8th June. The course was conducted by Barb Stephens and Don Brown from the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association (ATFCA) and gave the participants an understanding of athletics in an informal setting. Kyle Vander Kuyp was also on hand to take the hurdle component of the course.

It is hoped that the Academy students and school workers will build upon their knowledge by completing a level 1 ATFCA coaching course later in the year. Barb and Don are steadily building strong relationships with the indigenous community members and will continue to help the students to learn more about athletics, not only in a competitive environment but also on how to set up training programs and run athletic carnivals.
All attendees were given the ATFCA Orientation To Coaching manual; this was complimented by the Athletics Australia STAR resource.

On Friday 9th June a come and try day for athletics was held at the Kuarna Plains Aboriginal School. At a whole of school assemby traditional songs were sang to welcome their guests, then Kyle enthralled the students with tales of his experiences as an athlete and as a school student. First to test the newly marked track were the secondary students. They were taken through a very thorough warm up by Kyle and then broken into groups to try the long jump, shot and various sprint races. The students were very excited and gave their very best. A couple of students showed real potential in the long jump and sprint events.

After a bbq lunch it was the turn of the primary school (years 1-7) again all students tried their very best and were rewarded with a t-shirt and water bottle, Kyle was kept extremely busy signing them all.
Athletics Australia will continue to provide support to the school as they implement an athletics program to compliment their health program.
